It's just a shame that the environments aren't the most interesting or memorable.
DREADOUT SEQUEL SERIES
Some may argue that the core of the series hasn't changed too much, but considering the scarcity of original 2D games in this series, it's far from stale and instead an excellent execution of a proven formula, with a few new items that add some fresh twists to exploration and combat. It plants just enough breadcrumbs to give you a vague sense of the general direction you want to be heading, discreetly pointing towards unexplored areas on your map, and any dead end is a location you know you will definitely have to come back to, once you obtain the right equipment to open up the path. Like in previous games, going off the beaten path and using your items in sometimes unique ways can reward you with smaller upgrades, like additional energy tanks and missiles, which gradually makes combat easier.īut Dread is meticulously designed to steer you in the right direction without being blatant about it, resulting in exploratory gameplay that feels organic. Rarely does the map mark exactly where you need to go next, forcing you to rely on your own intuition and willingness to explore in order to make progression. Interestingly, while there is an intended path from start to finish, the game does not hold your hand.

Samus lacks in weaponry and isn't particularly agile during the first hour, but by the time you reach the late stages of the game, she can rather effortlessly wipe out common foes in her way and has several abilities that make traversal (and filling out every single square on your map) a breeze. The gameplay loop remains as satisfying as ever.
